Self-defense today may not be for everyone in terms of full-on courses. Not many people have time to train in dojos, nor can their bodies take the kind of punishment needed to learn martial arts like jiu-jitsu. This is why some Americans consider carrying concealed weapons like a baton, a knife, or even a gun. While these are good options in terms of self-defense, Will Sherlund, founder of Gutter Fighting Secrets, suggests that people should learn at least a few basic defensive techniques since not every situation will be ideal when the time comes. Here are some examples of those defensive techniques.

Striking vulnerable places: Like the forehead of Goliath, people need to know which parts of the body are vulnerable for them to exploit when needed. For starters, people should memorize these vulnerable places of the body: eyes, throat, nose, solar plexus, groin, and knee. Hitting any of these spots could give you enough time to escape from your attacker.

Wrist grabs: Some defensive moves may not immobilize your attacker. However, if you can inflict enough pain, it stops them in their tracks. For example, if you can grab your attacker’s wrists, grab their ring and pinkie finger with one hand and the middle and index finger with the other hand. What you’d do next is to pull the four fingers apart from each other while bending the entire wrist forward.

Use your head: The skull is one of the body’s toughest bones. Using it to attack your opponent is one of the best strategies for self-defense. Whether you’re trying to break free from someone restraining you from behind or attacking someone head-on, Will Sherlund advises that you put as much momentum as you can and brace yourself for pain as well.
